Our Storyline

The story line of our music video is the disguised Gaga trying to shop and to keep on trend but without being noticed. She always wants to try the new trends as she is a style icon. Gaga in the studio is stage Gaga this is the outrageous and creative Gaga that trademarks Gaga herself as everyone is always anticipating what Gaga will wear next.

As the chorous is 'Fashion, put it all on me. Don't you wanna see these clothes on me?'
we tried to tie our audio with the visual by having Gaga put clothes up against her in shops and poses in the studio.

READ THROUGH THIS

We chose ‘Lady gaga fashion’ due to us thinking it was a good song choice for us to use and because it was fun and interesting. Lady Gaga inspired our music video because of her creativity which allowed us to be more creative and original with our video and having fun with it. We also used our AS knowledge she uses things we already know about for example mise en scene and in it has costumes and props. She has alot of costumes some are weird some a plain. Also because she is becoming a famous artist due to her getting three awards this year also. Because she appeals to all audiences and media is about everybody. And due to her being up beat and pop and we liked this sort of music. It is like pop videos as it has lots of costumes and props to give it fun exciting feel. Also because of the fast cuts we used and these are usely in pop videos. And we used humor when she put the clothes against her in the shops and started cat walking this was funny, as normally in shops you would not do this.

We did something new by using a song that she has not been brought out yet so it looks more like ours. Also we looked at things like Mise en scene by having different locations and settings. We filmed in college in the studio to make it real like similar music videos and on the college grounds. However, we also filmed on location in Manchester. This is different to a conventional Lady Gaga video because she always films in a studio. In Manchester, we filmed inside shops and around the town this was particularly important due to the fact that we had the song ‘Fashion’ for our music video. And music videos have different locations. Also we used different props to develop music videos and costumes we used balloons an umbrella a mask and a wig. This was because lady gaga is an eccentric person and has a lot of different props also the wig due lady gaga having blonde hair. Costumes we used a black dress a grey coat shoes this. Because lady gaga has an array of different outfits in her videos also she wears black and white so we used black and white. Also the fact its about fashion due to having fashion in the song. Also we used Madonna vogue and it’s similar to her video due things like it being black and white just male dancers etc. Also we used different lighting techniques in our video for example we used studio lighting to make our star look more striking. We had lip-syncing this was because this common technique in music video. Also we used an array of camera shots: for example a tracking shot when she is walking to the shops. A close up when she is in the light it gives reference to like when celebrities are in the spotlight also gives her a god like image.

Filming and Location shots

We had to spend half a day looking for a fashion shop to film in, we came across many obsticles as where the shops did not allow us to film in and we had to ask for permission from the store directors.
We went into almost 20 shops and weren't allowed to film any clothing, we wanted to film in a high street fashion shop but luckily we were finally allowed to film in a shop in the Arndale Center the store was not exactly fashion related but was a gothic/emo style but it linked in with our theme.
We was brave enough to film in the middle of the city center and also outside in public, we wanted to add realism and make our video original.
We used the studio to film some of our glamorous high fashion aimed shots, where we used lighting to create different effects.

Lady Gaga Dress up and Dress down

The idea behind the dresscodes was the shots we used on location would be Gaga in disguise in shades and a coat and her identity kept secret in contrast to the Gaga parts that we filmed in the studio as they were the Gaga everyone knows and loved. As she is more outrageous and imaginative with the costumes, such as the pearls and lace masks etc.

This mese en scene helped us distinguish the stage Gaga from the disguised Gaga which we wanted to do because if Gaga went shopping in the outrageous things she tends to wear there would be a huge audience following her and peoples heads turning. We did this to create realism in our music video.

4. How did you use media technologiesin the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?

At first, we wanted to do a sad love song, It was called 'true' by the artist brandy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOTvY_gjG_s

We thought this would be an easy song do choose but then realised we wanted more of a challenge so started looking for upbeat songs to choose, we thought of hilary duff 'with love' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwXxUTGNe2U

then went on to Lady Gaga - 'Fashion' as we liked the song and the fact it hadn't had a video released for the track originally so we chose this song as we could use out imagination more to create a video with out personal stamp on it.

For our research we used the internet to look at and study magazine adverts and CD covers and also Lady Gaga music videos, and other upbeat pop videos, such as: Britney Spears – ‘Piece of me’ and Madonnas – ‘Vogue’ as we decided to take a Fashion approach as the song we chose to do is called Lady Gaga – ‘Fashion’ therefore, a fashion theme seemed most appropriate. We looked at other upbeat videos and CD covers and Magazine adverts in the hope it would look realistic and professional. Our music video was the first video to the song ‘Fashion’ this was a bonus aswell as a negative, As we had no video to get ideas from but we then had no video for it to be compared to, making it more exciting to do. For our print-based work, We tried follow media conventions to keep it looking accurate and professional and to make our CD cover look realistic I researched Gaga’s pictures and CD covers to have an idea of what we needed to do to make our CD cover look good. We used a handheld video camera to film our music video as it was handy as we filmed in different locations e.g shopping mall, inside shops etc. We also used studio lighting as they made our shot look more realistic as it reinforced the professionalism is out work, as most music videos use studio lighting, we decided to use the studio lighting for the Lady Gaga the audience know and love which is the outrageous outfits and crazy poses and the natural lighting on the street locations as this was the ‘natural’ Gaga in everyday clothing. This was to show a contrast between the two Gaga’s and to emphasis the two personalities which gaga has (normal Gaga and stage Gaga). We used the mese en scene in our music video as glamourous and extravagant as this is what people expect from Lady Gaga so we incorporated pearls, lace masks into the studio shots we used to reinforce the theme and to make our video more realistic.

Q2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

We decided to change the font as we thought that the one below had a circus feel to it. So the poster above looks more professional and music related.

Our magazine advert states the date in which the album is released the website it you can download the track from. It also has the iTunes, HMV, and play.com logos to show where the track is available, we have included a quote from a music magazine, to show the support and feedback the track is getting to make it more appealing to the audience.
Lady Gaga tends to have her face on the cover of her albums in a close-up shot to emphasis and personalise her album. We included this on our album cover, as we wanted to convey what Gagas albums would convey which gives a creative and imaginative feel. Our album cover is very Lady Gaga as it’s a close up of her face and the pearls and makeup (black lipstick and thick eye liner and huge lashes) all contribute to the Gaga theme we wanted to create. This theme helps promote the realism we were going for as it is a typical Gaga CD cover, since we analyzed other Gaga CD covers previously this gave us an idea of what we need to do to and included our own ideas to make it more original.

The inside of the CD is a four way picture with crazy high fashion poses, which is very gaga like to keep the theme flowing. The Album cover looks very glamorous as the pearls used normally emphasises the glamorous, rich and classy look.
It also shows Lady Gaga wearing a very glamorous and extravagant head piece this really shows Lady Gaga's style as she is always outrageous yet glamorous. The pearls and Lace reinforce the glamour. We used different text on the album, Lady Gaga is written in bigger and broader text as people may find Gaga unrecognisable most of the time due to all the creative and sometimes crazy outfits she wears so people know Lady Gaga by her name.
We also looked at Lady Gaga as we wanted to ensure out music video had a gaga 'feel'.
We got the idea of people dressed in dramatic makeup and weird outfits doing poses, which we would include in our Album to incorporate the Fashion side into our video. Especially wanted the high-end feel to our album. The second addition to the inside of our album is actually song lyrics but we wanted them to be more creative so they flow with the theme more so we sculpted them to and the result was very effective as it looked like the side of a building and is very abstract. The back of the album cover listed the songs on the album, it also had a barcode and an iTunes logo and a website, we included small print which all promote the realism we need on the album as we wanted it to be compared to real professional album covers. We have also included 'RRA Productions' which is the name of our group, which appears at the end of the music video, and we created a logo for 'RRA Productions’, which is a light bulb just to reinforce the realism of our album. Our magazine advert, CD covers and music video all compliment each other as they all have the same theme running throughout, the theme is extravagant and Gaga-like.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Lady Gaga tends to have her face on the cover of her albums in a closeup shot to emphasis that its her album. Lady gaga's album is called 'The fame' this is effective because this is the album that put her in the spotlight and what made her Lady Gaga. This album cover is mostly based on the title and Lady Gaga's name in general as this album gave Lady Gaga her name as it boosted her into the charts etc.
Lady Gaga's eyes are covered and eyes are normally shown to draw the audience into the album but the shades cover her eyes so the audiences eyes will wander elsewhere e.g. to the title of the album and the artists name. The Album cover looks very glamourous as the shades normally emphasis the rich and famous hence the title 'The Fame'.

This next album cover shows Lady Gaga wearing a very glamourous and extravagant head piece this really shows Lady Gaga's style as she is always outrageous yet glamorous. The pearls and Lace reinforce the glamour. The second album cover is the remixes to the original songs and the picture is like a remake of the original since her eye is still covered but her image has completely changed since she has red curly hair oppose to the straight blonde hair she had in the first album cover. Despite these differences the second album cover still emphasizes the text on the album cover to ensure the audience knows that this album is a remix album and not the original.

We also looked at Lady Gaga as we wated to ensure out music video had a gaga 'feel'
We got the idea of people dressed in dramatic makeup and weird outfits doing poses which we will include throughout our video to encorporate the Fashion side into our video. From highstreet fashion (filming in changing rooms etc) to highend fashion (poses etc).

Q3. What have you learned from the Audience Feedback?

We asked the audience to give feedback on our finished music video. We asked them
what there overall response to the video was and to name three strengths of the video, here is what was said;
One strength of our music video was the mise en scene, the audience seemed to like the fact we took into consideration Lady Gagas outrageous outfits and the styles she tends to have which cause controversy. Another strength mentioned was the fast and matching cuts to the beat of the song as it was upbeat, the fast cuttings meant that the audience was still captivated with our music video rather than drifting off. They also enjoyed the fun theme that ran throughout our video as it linked with the genre of the song, which is a happy up tempo song. The audience also commented on our editing, where we had reversed the final shot to create an effect of the balloons flying up which gives our music video a smooth finishing.
However, we had some suggestions for improvement, one suggestion for improvement was on the lip syncing as it was off in some parts of the song only by a split second but obviously was noticeable if the audience noticed it.

We asked a group there overall responses to the video and they said they thought overall that the performance was good and we had a wide range of different camera angles and shots, such as pans, tracking shots, close ups, extreme close ups, mid shots and high angle shots.
An area they chose to give us detailed feedback on was mise en scene they said we had good use of props they said the use of the umbrella, wig and the clothes reinforced the theme of fashion and link with the lyrics of the song.
They also said we used different locations and they were effective because the different locations had relevance to the song and matched it. We used natural lighting and studio lighting to ensure we had a variety of shots and to separate the two as the natural lighting enforced how lady gaga is in everyday life and the studio lighting showed the audience the stage lady gaga that they all know and love. We decided not to change anything in light of this feedback as we think our music video is representative of lady gaga and we are proud of it.

Production

Production Treatment : Rebia, Ross, Andy

The Music Video : Lady Gaga – Fashion

Duration: The music video will be 3:OO long.

Audience: The target audience would most likely be teenage girls ranging from 12-20 as the song is very upbeat and the genre is pop. The song is about fashion, which girls tend to be more interested in their appearance and fashion at this age.

Resume: The video wont really have much of a narrative as we want to bring a lady gaga theme to out music video. The little narrative that is there will be lady gaga (Rebia) changing outfits and cat-walking around the town centre like a diva. Since the song has a lot of beats we will match the cutting rate to the beat to keep the audience interesting a lot of close up of clothing items to interpret the song title in our song.

Suggested elements: The performance will include lip syncing and Rebia strutting her stuff and changing outfits, also there will be random shots of high fashion poses to emphasis the fashion title of the song. The costumes will be outrageous like Gaga herself and dramatic makeup. The special effects will be titles at the beginning and end, we want it to look like a film opening e.g ‘Starring Ross’

The key locations will be around college, also against a green screen and also filming around our town centre.

Lady Gaga Fashion Song

This is Lady Gaga - Fashion. This song is unreleased but we like this song because it doesn't have a video and we like the fact the song is very upbeat and we have lots of fashion inspired ideas that we would like to portray in our own video.

Comparisons/Music Video Analysis

As we decided on an upbeat theme to our video. We looked at pop videos and used them to get ideas and shots we could use in our own music video to Lady Gaga Fashion. We looked at Artists such as Britney Spears as her music tends to be very upbeat the song we got ideas from is 'Piece of me' we liked the bit that was filmed in the toilets as we could easily replicate that in our own video and also the paprazzi flashes used in the video. We also looked at Katy Perry 'Hot n' Cold' and we really liked the way the humour played a big part in that video which encouraged us to try and bring humour into our music video.

Madonna’s ‘vogue’ is a pop/dance genre of music and that is similar to Gaga ‘Fashion’. Madonna’s music video doesn’t really have a narrative it seems to be based on fashion, which ties in the lyrics with the music video. Throughout Madonna’s video there seems to be a studio feel since the lighting is very good and everyone is dressed smart and fashionable and there are props in the background of the performances such as ladders and covered up statues and also there are scenes where Madonna seems to be on a set of a fashion photo shoot, some of the people in the video are filmed posing in front of a white studio background. The video doesn’t really have a narrative but more of a disjuncture as most of the music video is random shots of men and women posing and lip-syncing with the song, which keeps the video flowing nicely. The video is mostly performance, Madonna dances with a group of men in a blank room with lots of dancers, male dancers, surrounding Madonna creating a feel of importance as she is centered within the group of dancers and all eyes are on her reinforcing the fact that Madonna is the protagonist within the music video. The music video is mainly performance since there isn’t much narrative within it. This is effective as the song doesn’t really need a narrative as it is self-explanatory about fashion and the outfits Madonna wears ensure s the viewer understands this as she has numerous outfit changes during the music video and all the dancers seem to be dressed in expensive suites and clothing.

An establishing shot is used at the beginning of Madonna's music video to establish the setting at the of the video so the viewers are aware of what is going on, dancers are shown stood still like a statue edited with fast cutting to show that a performance will take place.
Close up shot of Madonna's back are shown with every beat changing the shot to a performer and then back to her back. Fashion and glamour is shown, it also follows on to a extreme close up shot of Madonna's face which (knotts) beauty, make up, jewellery fashion as a whole icon. Medium shots of male performers are shown which are shown the detail of the scene.
Zoom in shot is used when Madonna

In our music video analysis we analysed Lady gaga alejandro and looked at the various similarities between this video over Madonna vogue. The similarities were in the two videos included men in them dancing in the background and then at the front shows Madonna and Lady Gaga are in control at the heart of the video. This is very empowering for women as it shows men worshipping the ground they walk on. Lady gaga and Madonna both have blonde hair which is aimed at the male gaze because of stereotypes such as the blonde bombshell even though, they go against this stereotype. Both videos are in black and white this may be due to the whole old hollywood glamour appearance they are trying to portray. In the two videos theyare sexual in there performances this maybe them celebrating their sexuality and femininity and also to appeal to the male audience. They both have a dance performance in their videos which is very similar, both surrounded by male dancers and really high beat. There facial expressions are very flirty and alluring in both video and they have close ups with the camera to make sure their facial expressions are interacting with the audience. On the other hand, Lady Gaga costumes are more updated, fascinating and different and the costumes for the men are different. The men are more sexual towards lady gaga in her performance and her video has her own twist in it.

Initial Planning Meeting

Rebia and Ross both decided to do there music video on Lady Gaga's unreleased track "Fashion".

The roles in our group are equally shared between both Rebia and Ross, which include
Performance
Camerawork/Cameraman
Editing
Blog writing

Before we decided to make our music video on lady gaga's - fashion track, we researched through a number of various genres including, RnB, Hip Hop, Pop.
We also looked at different artists which include; Hilary Duff, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. Britney Spears and Rihannas music videos were love stories and broken hearted girls which we thought would have been a good idea, however we wanted to do something more upbeat and exciting to watch.

The settings and locations we will need are as following;
Around college we have looked at background walls we could use for medium and close up shots
The stair case in the ellis kenndy building
Window cile
and also some external locations such as Deansgate, Town, Picadilly.
The costumes we will need would include hats, wigs, heels, bags, dresses, sunglasses, fabric and beads.
We have also thought about using special effects such as a spotlight on the performer.
